There are times when chewing, constant pressing of a pen or other small noises annoy us endlessly. For those with a condition known as misophonia, however, these sounds are more than just annoying—they can be unbearable.
It was first named as a specific condition in 2001. Misophonia is a word derived from ancient Greek and means "hatred of sound". Also known as selective sensitivity syndrome, it is a genuine brain abnormality with psychological and physiological symptoms.
In a recent study, MRI scans showed a marked difference in the brain structure of those with misophonia and in the way their brains respond when they hear repeated sounds.
They may feel anxiety, nervousness and panic when they hear the sounds. This can lead to avoidance, isolation and depression.
Research on misophonia is still relatively new. The criteria for diagnosing the disorder have not yet been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), but some doctors have proposed inclusion in "Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and Related Disorders".
What causes it?
The sounds that trigger misophonia can vary from person to person. They usually include:
– cheers
– swallowing/chewing sounds
– noisy suction of liquids
– clearing the throat
– lip smacking
– letrat me zhurmë
– tingujt e akrepave të orës
– tingujt e zogjve etj.
The condition also appears to be more common in people who have tinnitus. Tinnitus is a disorder where people hear a ringing in their ears that no one else can hear.
How can misophonia be alleviated?
Misophonia is a lifelong disorder with no cure, but some ways can treat and alleviate it:
1- Cognitive behavioral therapy
2- Counseling with therapists
3- Therapy for the treatment of tinnitus
