For the first time, scientists have managed to see the moment a star swallowed an entire planet, a fate that they believe also awaits Earth.

Astronomers have previously been able to observe the moments before a planet is swallowed by a dying star, but this is the first time the exact moment has been seen. At least that's what a group of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology claim.

"I first read about the fact that the planets of the solar system will one day be swallowed up by the sun when I was in high school, so it was really incredible for us to be able to find the first case of such an event! ", Kishalay De, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told CNN .

As it runs out of energy, the star swells up to 1 million times its original mass, burning up and devouring anything it encounters. The whole event happened 12 thousand light years away from us, in the constellation "Aquila" and the swallowed planet was as big as Jupiter. They spotted this moment in May 2020, but it took a year of work to understand what they had seen.

According to researchers, our planet will also have the same fate, but this will happen after 5 billion years. "We are seeing the future of the Earth," said De. "If another civilization were watching us from 10,000 light-years away as the Sun devoured the Earth, they would see the Sun suddenly brighten and 'spit out' material and then dust forming around it, before return to its original form".
