British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been charged with two new criminal offenses, including a charge of rape and a charge of sexual harassment.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the new charges relate to two different women and are alleged to have occurred in 2009. The BBC writes that Brand, 50, is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 20, 2026 to face these charges.

We recall that Brand previously pleaded not guilty to five other charges, including two counts of rape, two of sexual harassment and one of indecent assault, which relate to four women and events that occurred between 1999 and 2005 in central London and Bournemouth.

A trial on these original charges is scheduled to begin on 16 June 2026 at Southwark Crown Court. Brand is accused of raping a woman in Bournemouth in 1999, indecent assault on another woman in Westminster in 2001, and sexually assaulting another woman between 2004 and 2005. The other two charges relate to oral rape and sexual assault on a woman in 2004.

The investigation into Brand began after British media reports in September 2023 that several women had come forward with allegations of sexual abuse. The Metropolitan Police said victims were receiving support from officers specially trained to deal with sexual abuse cases.

Russell Brand, born in Essex, rose to fame as a comedian and later as the presenter of the television show Big Brother's Big Mouth. He has also had radio shows on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music. Brand later built a career in Hollywood, starring in such popular films as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him To The Greek.”

The allegations against Brand have sparked widespread debate in British and international public opinion, raising questions about the culture of abuse in the entertainment industry and the protection of victims. The 2026 trials are expected to be among the most widely watched in British media.
