Boiling lobsters while they are alive will be banned as part of a government strategy to improve animal welfare in England, according to The Guardian.

The practice is already illegal in Switzerland, Norway and New Zealand.

Animal welfare charities say stunning lobsters with an electric gun or chilling them in cold air or ice before cooking is more humane.

The ban would be based on a law introduced by the Conservatives in 2022, which states that invertebrates, including octopuses, crabs and lobsters, are sentient and feel pain just like other animals.

"When live, conscious animals are placed in boiling water, they endure excruciating pain for several minutes. This is torture and entirely avoidable. Humane alternatives, such as electric stunning, are readily available," said Ben Sturgeon, executive director of the charity Crustacean Compassion.

Other changes to the Labour Party's long-awaited strategy announced today include banning chicken cages and pig farrowing crates, ending puppy breeding, consulting on banning electric shock collars for dogs and introducing humane requirements for the slaughter of farmed fish.

The proposals also tighten hunting regulations, with a ban on hunting rabbits during the breeding season and a ban on hunting on 'trails'.

The Labour Party pledged in its manifesto to extend the 2005 fox hunting ban to trails.

Animal welfare charities say 'trail' hunting is being used to continue the killing of foxes.
