Has there ever been life on the moon?

Today our natural satellite is uninhabitable, but in the distant past there were conditions for very simple life forms to exist.

According to a study published by Astrobiology, there were at least two periods during which conditions may have been favorable for life on the Moon.

Researcher Dirk Schulze-Makuch claims that such an environment was able to support simple life forms.

It originally happened shortly after the moon was formed from a debris disk 4 billion years ago produced by the collision between an asteroid and Earth.

The same thing happened again during the period of intense volcanic activity, about 3.5 billion years ago.

It is believed that in both of these periods the moon released large amounts of volatile, superheated gases, including water vapor, from within. In these two time periods, an atmosphere thick enough to prevent evaporation was formed on the water surfaces for millions of years.

"If liquid water and a substantial atmosphere had been present on the Moon since it was formed and persisted for long periods of time, the surface would probably have been minimally colonized by life forms," he comments. researcher Schulze-Makuch.

His and colleague Ian Crawford's (University of London) work builds on results from recent space missions and sophisticated analysis of lunar and terrestrial rock samples that show how the crust and mantle are not so water-deprived as previously thought.

"Life on the Moon may have originated in the same way as life on Earth," the researchers say.
