Coffee is one of the favorite drinks for millions of people who enjoy it every day and often on an empty stomach, as it is the first thing they do when they get out of bed.
However, in recent years the question has been raised as to whether it harms the body if someone drinks without eating something first.
The New York Times reached out to experts and gathered data from research examining how caffeine works and the role milk plays in coffee, as some prefer it plain or with milk.
According to the American publication, researchers have been researching the benefits and harms of coffee consumption since the 1970s, and according to Kim Barrett, professor of physiology and membrane biology at the University of California, the stomach can withstand a variety of irritants, including coffee.
So what has been proven is that cigarette smoking and anti-inflammatory drugs can irritate the stomach, but coffee does not.
"Coffee, even in concentrated form, is unlikely to cause objective damage to the stomach," says Dr. Byron Cryer, chief of internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Thus, it is unlikely to cause a problem on an empty stomach if one drinks coffee, but one may experience heartburn or stomach pain.
Possible side effects
Coffee can act on the gut from the moment of consumption, but caffeine increases heart rate and blood pressure. Therefore, overload can be created, as a result of which the sleep schedule will be disrupted.
Also, drinking coffee may not be related to whether the stomach is empty or full, but how you consume it is. A simple coffee, especially if it has no milk, can lower the pH levels of the stomach more easily, making heartburn more likely to occur.
In fact, the chances of more severe discomfort increase as one may be dealing with a chronic stomach infection, virus or germ, or from excessive alcohol consumption.
"There is much more evidence for the benefits of coffee than for the harms," notes Dr. Byron Cryer, who emphasizes that coffee is not dangerous for the body, while in case someone has a problem, it would be good to visit the doctor for further control.
