Some people have a habit of drinking a glass of water before going to bed, while others avoid it because they don't want to wake up in the middle of the night. But what is better for the body? Dietitian Lauren Manaker explains that you should drink less than a glass of water two hours before bed and in small sips.

Two hour rule

"Restful sleep is vital to health," notes Manaker, explaining why the rule of not consuming water for two hours before bed has been established. The dietitian explains that: "A person who gets up once a night to go to the toilet is not a problem when it happens sporadically.

But if he gets up two or more times every night, something is wrong. The first thing he should do is change his bedtime routine." This is necessary because constant visits to the toilet risk causing a "vicious cycle" and can ultimately lead to lack of sleep.

This is a dangerous condition, accompanied by serious problems, including:

– Memory loss
– Weakened immune system
– Infections
– Hypertension
– Elevated cholesterol levels
– Weight gain

Of course there are health problems (eg prostate) that cause nocturia. Therefore, if you get up twice or more each night to go to the toilet, it is important to find out the cause. If there is no medical reason, you should change your sleep routine, emphasizes Roxana Ehsani.

However, it is important to note that in small amounts, water offers several benefits before going to bed at night. First, when it's very hot, a little water before bed can protect you from dehydration. It can also help you maintain a normal body temperature.

Therefore, if you have a respiratory virus, a glass of water before bed can help you sleep better.
