The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has secured the support of the ultra-nationalist who came third in the first round of the Turkish presidential elections.

Sinan Ogan received 5.2 percent of the votes in the first round of the elections held on May 14 and prevented Erdogan from scoring a victory in the first round.

It was the first time in his 20 years in power that Erdogan did not win the election in the first round, and he will face Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the presidential candidate of six opposition parties, in a runoff.

Ogan met with the Turkish leader on Friday and held separate negotiations with allies of opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

"We will support the People's Alliance candidate, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the second round of elections held on May 28," he said during a televised speech.

Ogan has portrayed himself as a supporter of Turkish nationalism espoused by the founder of modern Turkey, Kemal Ataturk.

He has called for the immediate deportation of millions of migrants and called for the state to take a tougher stance on "terrorists" - a reference to Kurdish groups fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast.

Despite the support offered to Erdogan, analysts have raised questions about whether his voters will vote for Erdogan.

However, Ogan's support for Erdogan undermines Kilicdaroglu's efforts to get as many votes as possible among nationalists for the second round of elections./REL
