Moscow has chosen a particular way to play into the hands of the European Union.
A satirical Christmas commercial aired on Russian state television mocks European politics, which, according to Russians, blames President Vladimir Putin for everything.
The spot features Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who appears as Santa Claus, dressed in blue and with Ukrainian symbols. Surrounding him are digitally edited (AI) versions of prominent European politicians and journalists, who are participating in a Christmas music event. All repeat, in a sarcastic tone, that every problem – from the economy to security – is “Putin’s fault.”
The scenes in the video present images that refer to an energy crisis and social insecurity: high electricity bills, poor families, expensive festive tables, and immigrants who appear to be sitting under the Christmas tree.
The message attempts to portray Europe as trapped in a narrative of collective blame for every domestic problem on Russia.
At the climax of the spot, "Zelensky - Santa Claus" is shown stealing children's gifts, looking ironically at the camera. This is followed by the phrase that this too "is because of Putin."
The video ends with a European family watching television, with the presenters and commentators repeating the same narrative, before the final call is heard: "Dear Europeans, keep your blind faith in Santa Claus."
