EU criticizes Kosovo and Serbia: You are hindering each other's membership!

This Wednesday, the EU-Western Balkans summit took place in Brussels, after which European leaders published a joint statement in which they reaffirmed their full commitment to the membership of the countries of the region in the European Union.

However, in one of the points of this statement there is a criticism directed at Pristina and Belgrade. This is due to the lack of normal relations between them. According to EU leaders, the two countries are hindering each other's integration.

"The lack of normalization of relations between Pristina and Belgrade continues to hinder both partners on their European path. All agreements reached in the EU-facilitated Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina must be implemented, in particular the Agreement on the Roadmap to Normalization and its Annex. Support under the Reform and Growth Mechanism for the Western Balkans is conditional on the constructive engagement of the partners, with measurable progress and concrete results in the normalization of their relations," the statement said.

Let us recall that Serbia was absent from this summit, which was described as an important gap by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who supported the region's rapid integration into the EU.

"For the first time in the last 13 or 14 years, neither I nor anyone else will go to that intergovernmental conference. No one will represent the Republic of Serbia, so the Western Balkans will be without the Republic of Serbia," said Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić when announcing that he would not attend.

Kosovo, meanwhile, is the only country participating in this summit from the Western Balkans region that does not enjoy candidate country status, although it applied in December 2022.
