Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that no Serbian official will represent Serbia at the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which is taking place today in Brussels.

"I believe that I am protecting Serbia and its interests with this step, because we need to show what we have done, and we have done a lot," Vučić said, apparently referring to the fact that there was again no consensus on opening Group 3 with Serbia.

By Serbia's absence from today's meeting, Serbia's Minister of European Integration, Nemanja Starović, wrote, it is not only defending the dignity of its people, "but also the integrity of the accession process, as well as the credibility of the European idea in Serbia."

Vučić said that, even though Serbia would be absent from today's summit, he was grateful for the respect shown by the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, with whom he spoke the night before.

The annual EU-Western Balkans summit will take place this afternoon in Brussels. The summits have become regular annual events since 2020.

According to the announcement, the meeting, chaired by President António Costa, "will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate and reaffirm the strength of the EU-Western Balkans strategic relationship and the benefits it brings to citizens."

Serbian officials made another attempt to open Group 3 in negotiations with the EU in recent weeks, but there was no consensus in the Council on this decision. The quality of some of the steps taken, notably the unfinished selection of new members of the electronic media regulator, was criticized by the opposition and civil society.

In 2022, Serbia almost pulled out of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tirana, due to a dispute with Kosovo over the situation in the Serb-majority north. Vučić ultimately attended the Summit.
