Five Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in an Israeli attack near Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital.

Correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa, were in a tent for journalists at the main gate of the hospital when it was hit, Al Jazeera reported.

Sunday's "targeted killing" was "another open and premeditated attack on press freedom," Al Jazeera added.

Shortly after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that they had targeted Anas al-Sharif, writing in a Telegram post that he had "served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas."

Throughout the war, Israel has not allowed international journalists in Gaza to report freely. As a result, many media outlets rely on local journalists inside the territory for coverage, writes the BBC.
