New Year 2026 arrives in Australia

Australia welcomes the New Year with a fireworks display over Sydney Harbour.

Earlier, it was New Zealand, which welcomed the year 2026, also with a fireworks display.

Thousands of citizens gathered in public squares, hands raised in cheers, as fireworks lit up the night sky after the celebrations.

Kiritimati Island, also known as Christmas Island, along with 10 other largely uninhabited islands in the Central Pacific, were the first to "welcome" the year 2026.

On Chatham Island, part of New Zealand, New Year's Eve arrived a few minutes before the rest of the country. This remote archipelago has about 600 inhabitants.

Tonga and Samoa also celebrated the arrival of 2026.

The US is one of the last countries to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
