Portuguese police have seized a semi-submarine carrying 1.7 tonnes of cocaine off the country's coast and have detained four people in the Atlantic.

Investigators say the cargo was destined for the Iberian Peninsula before being moved further into Europe.

The ship was described as a poorly constructed and extremely unsafe vessel that could not even be towed to shore.

This is not the first such case. Previously, near the Azores, authorities seized a similar semi-submarine loaded with more than six tons of cocaine.

European law enforcement agencies are increasingly intercepting large drug shipments traveling by sea from Latin America.
