The South Korean plane crash has so far claimed 122 lives, but the death toll is expected to rise to 179.

It was 9 a.m. local time in South Korea when the Jeju Air plane with 181 people on board crashed into a wall while landing on the runway.

The media have also published footage of the moment the plane crashed and then burst into flames.

Initial investigations indicate that the tragedy was caused by the Boeing 737-8AS aircraft colliding with birds in flight, causing a malfunction in the landing gear system.

Local media report that there were 173 South Koreans and two Thais on board - as well as six crew members.
