Revenge from Tehran? Concern for Italian journalist in "terror
Cecilia Sala

The arrest in Tehran of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has caused great concern. Twenty-nine-year-old Sala collaborates with the newspaper Il Foglio, with the private television channel La 7 and produces a podcast on international politics and current affairs.

She was arrested on December 19th as she was preparing to return to Italy after two weeks in the Iranian capital. He sought to highlight unseen aspects of citizens' daily lives, with details of journalistic interest.

Prisons of terror

To date, no official charges have been filed against her. What is known is that she is in Evin prison, along with political prisoners, in inhumane conditions. The lights never go out, each cell is filled with seven or more prisoners, and there are constant screams of torture. The Italian journalist was only allowed to speak on the phone for a few seconds with her mother and to meet the Italian ambassador in Tehran.

Revenge from Tehran?

"We are following the whole case from the very beginning. We are working for Cecilia's release, we need caution and secrecy," said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. According to the press, it is possible that it is a revenge from Tehran, due to the arrest, two weeks ago, at Milan airport, of Iranian Mohammad Abedini Nazafabadi. He had just arrived in the Italian capital from Istanbul and is accused of arms trafficking. The order for his arrest was issued by the United States.

But it is also implied that Tehran is angry with the Italian journalist and her assessment of the local actress Zeinab Moussai. The latter was arrested for several performances with ironic humor against the regime, which led to her being behind bars. On December 18, the Italian wrote on the networks: "Zeinab has collected a series of amusing jokes about the life of prisoners. The days she spent in isolation managed to turn them into laughter". Now, the Italian journalist herself is in the cell.
