The Vatican has released the first image of Pope Francis since he was taken to hospital more than a month ago. The photo shows the leader of the Catholic Church celebrating Mass in his prayer room on Sunday morning.

He is wearing a purple robe as he sits in a wheelchair in front of an altar. No one else is in sight.

"This morning Pope Francis celebrated Holy Mass in the chapel of the apartment on the 10th floor of the Policlinico Gemelli ," a Vatican statement said.

Earlier, the Pope said he was facing a "period of reflection" after delivering his traditional Sunday prayer from the hospital. He thanked the faithful for " all the prayers," expressing his gratitude for those " who help me with such dedication."

"Our bodies are weak, but even so, nothing can prevent us from loving, from praying, from giving ourselves, from being there for each other, in faith, from shining signs of hope ," the Pope said.

Praising his medical team, he said: " How much light shines, in this sense, in hospitals and places of care! How much loving care illuminates the rooms, corridors, clinics, places where the most modest services are performed!"

The Pope also offered his prayers for "the countries wounded by war... that afflict Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo."
