The University of Tetova terminated its employment relationship with Artan Grubit, who taught at the Department of Journalism of the Faculty of Law of this university.

Mr. Grubi, who served as deputy prime minister in the previous coalition government between the Social Democratic League and the Democratic Union for Integration, fled the country three weeks ago, as authorities were preparing to start a trial against him on bribery charges.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Tetova, Safet Emruli, confirmed to the State News Agency MIA that the decision to dismiss Mr. Grubi was made due to his unexcused absence from work.

"The decision has been communicated to him officially, both by mail and electronically," explained Dean Emruli.
According to the law, an employee can be dismissed if he fails to show up at work for three consecutive days, or five days throughout the year, and does not give any reason for the absence.

The faculty's decision was welcomed by the coalition of Albanian parties in the government "Vlen", whose representatives said that Mr. Grubi "does not meet the moral nor professional criteria to teach at the University of Tetova."

On December 18, authorities in Skopje announced the international search for Mr. Grubi, on suspicion of fraud with the State Lottery along with its former director, Përparim Bajrami. The prosecution says the damage caused is estimated at 8.2 million euros.

Mr. Grubi and Mr. Bajrami have fled the country and their whereabouts are unknown.

Macedonian authorities began investigations and prosecutions following the US State Department's announcement on December 9 that it had designated former First Deputy Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Artan Grubi, and member of the Court of Appeals, Enver Bexheti, as persona non grata due to their involvement in acts of corruption.

The State Department statement said that Mr. Grubi and Mr. Bexheti “received bribes to undermine the judicial processes related to the conviction of Sasha Mijalkov, the former director of the Agency for Security and Intelligence in North Macedonia.”

The former deputy prime minister has not made any statements other than a Facebook post since the prosecution announced on December 11 that it would investigate the bribery case against Mr. Grubi and Mr. Bexheti. He said he was withdrawing from public life.

During a recent stay in Kosovo, the Chairman of the Democratic Union for Integration, Ali Ahmeti, of which Mr. Grubi is a member, said that "he was somewhere in Albanian territory."

"I haven't met him; it's good. It's a process that must have an epilogue. Artan Grubi is ready to answer before the justice system, to respect the laws, but not with vindictive and selective justice," said Mr. Ahmeti in the last days of 2024.

His statement prompted a reaction in Skopje from several political parties, some of which demanded that Mr. Ahmeti appear at the prosecutor's office to confess about Artan Grubi's whereabouts./ VOA
