Donald Trump has said that his historic trial and criminal conviction have been "very difficult" for his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump.

Last week, jurors found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to hide cash payments made to former movie star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

With the verdict, he became the first US president to be convicted of a crime, while he repeatedly called the trial rigged and politically motivated.

In an interview with Fox News over the weekend, Trump vowed that success in the upcoming November US election would be his "revenge." He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11 and plans to appeal the final decision.

Trump said during the interview that his legal battle in New York has been especially difficult for his wife. The lawsuit included salacious details of the alleged meeting between Mr. Trump and Daniels. Their report said Trump greeted her in silk pajamas in his hotel suite and other details about the intimate relationship.

In her testimony, Daniels also claimed that Mr. Trump and his wife sleep in different beds.

"She's fine, but I think it's very hard on her," Trump said of his wife, adding that "in many ways, she's tougher on the family than I am."

Under New York law, each of the 34 felony charges for which Mr. Trump was convicted could result in up to four years in prison — though that is not considered a likely outcome.
