The iconic cathedral in Paris, Notre Dame, will officially reopen its doors on December 7, following the 2019 fire that almost completely destroyed the 861-year-old building.

The restoration, a remarkable achievement in five years for a structure that took almost two centuries to build, is being seen as a triumph for French President Emmanuel Macron, who has pushed the project forward despite internal political crises.

This ceremony brings together world leaders, guests and believers in Paris, and this gathering is being seen as a rare moment of unity, at a time when the world is facing division and conflict.

US President-elect Donald Trump, US First Lady Jill Biden, Britain's Prince William and dozens of heads of state and government - a list of 1,500 guests - including Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani will attend the Notre Dame reopening ceremony held under the building's Gothic arch. The ceremony will be led by Archbishop Laurent Ulrich.

Initially, the ceremony was scheduled to be held in the courtyard of the Cathedral, but due to strong winds predicted for Saturday, authorities have decided to hold the entire ceremony inside Notre Dame.

For the cathedral's leader, Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, it is "more than a French monument" and is a heritage of world culture.

"The cathedral is an extraordinary symbol of unity. A sign of hope, because what seemed impossible has become possible," he said.

Saturday's events are a mix of solemn religious and cultural traditions.

In the evening, there will be a concert inside the cathedral to honor those who worked on its reconstruction.

Almost 170 bishops from France and abroad, along with priests from the 133 parishes of the diocese of Paris, will participate in the reopening ceremony.

The reopening of Notre Dame is happening at a time when the world is facing turmoil, with wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

For Christians and for Notre Dame leaders, the reopening ceremony will convey a symbol of unity and hope.

Security will be tight throughout the weekend, just as it was in Paris when the Olympic Games were held earlier this year.

The Île de la Cité – the small island in the Seine River that is home to Notre Dame – will be closed to tourists and non-residents, with access only available to guests and residents of the island.

Near the banks of the Seine, 40,000 spectators will be accommodated, who will be able to follow the celebrations on large screens.

For many, the reopening of Notre Dame is not only an achievement for France, but for the world, as the cathedral is expected to welcome 15 million visitors a year, up from the 12 million it had expected before the great fire.

After the 2019 fire, almost $1 billion in donations were quickly raised from around the world, proving that Notre Dame is a monument that attracts the attention of the whole world.
