The Hague Tribunal issues new indictment against Hashim Thaçi, summons

The Special Court in The Hague has filed a new indictment against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi for the criminal offense of obstruction of justice.

For this reason, the SSP says they have arrested Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj and Fadil Fazliu. They have also issued summonses for former Minister of Justice, Hajredin Kuçi.

"The Office of the Specialist Prosecutor (OSP) has charged Hashim THAÇI with the criminal offense of obstruction of justice, according to a confirmed Indictment. Mr. Thaçi was in the Kosovo Specialist Chambers Detention Facility when he was served with an arrest warrant and has been charged with three counts of obstruction of official persons in the performance of official duties, three counts of breach of procedural secrecy, and four counts of disobedience to the court," the announcement states.

The Special Prosecutor has announced that Thaçi will appear before a Pre-Trial Judge of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers regarding the charges of additional criminal offenses brought against him.

“The SPO has also arrested Bashkim SMAKAJN, Isni KILAJN and Fadil FAZLIU in Kosovo pursuant to an arrest warrant and transfer order issued by a Pre-Trial Judge of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers for attempting to obstruct officials in the performance of official duties and disobeying the court.

Messrs. Smakaj, Kilaj and Fazliu have been transferred to the Kosovo Specialist Chambers Detention Facility in The Hague and will also be brought before the court without undue delay.

Hajredin Kuçi has been issued a summons to appear before the Specialist Chambers, which has filed two charges against him for contempt of court.

The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) provided operational and logistical support to the SPO, and the Kosovo Police provided operational support.

"The SPO takes obstruction of justice extremely seriously and will continue to investigate and prosecute all those involved in this activity," the announcement states.
