US President Donald Trump has warned Vladimir Putin that there will be "severe consequences" if he refuses to end his war against Ukraine at their summit in Alaska on Friday.

Asked if Putin will face consequences if he refuses to stop fighting, Trump replied: "Yes... there will be very serious consequences."

The US president revealed his intention to seek a second immediate meeting with Putin, this time involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after their head-to-head talks in Alaska.

"If the first meeting goes well, we will have a quick second. I would like to do it almost immediately, and we will have a second quick meeting between President Putin and President Zelensky and me, if they wanted to have me there," Trump said.

Listening to Europe and Ukraine's demands that nothing be decided without Kiev, Trump said the Alaska talks would only set the "table for the second meeting".

Trump's insistence on Ukraine's involvement is likely to bring some relief to Kiev and its allies, who feared that American and Russian leaders could reach a deal that tears Ukraine apart and sells out European security interests.

Zelensky earlier on Wednesday said Trump supports providing security guarantees to Ukraine to ensure peace is sustainable. It is not yet clear what these guarantees will be or who will provide them.
