Trump warns of additional tariffs, Macron reacts
French President, Emmanuel Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted after Donald Trump's statement on imposing 10 percent customs tariffs on eight European countries because of Greenland, including France.

Macron sharply criticized American competition for trade deals that, according to him, “undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions and openly aim to weaken and subjugate Europe.” He called the continued accumulation of new tariffs “fundamentally unacceptable,” especially when they are used as a means of pressure on territorial sovereignty.

According to Macron, Europeans are the only ones who are not sufficiently protecting their companies and markets, at a time when other countries "are not respecting the rules of the level playing field."

In his speech, the French president strongly defended the idea of national sovereignty, calling it “not an outdated concept.” He said that preserving independence and sovereignty is essential to not forgetting the lessons of World War II, while also underlining the importance of international cooperation.

Macron also mentioned France's participation in military exercises in Greenland, stressing that this does not pose a threat to anyone, but is a sign of support for a European ally, Denmark.

Macron has appeared in sunglasses during meetings and his speech in Davos, after a few days ago with a swollen and red eye during his speech to the French armed forces.

"I apologize for the ugly appearance of my eye. Of course, it is something completely harmless," he said at the beginning of his speech.
