Trump does not give security guarantees for Ukraine: We will make Europe do it

President Donald Trump, during his first cabinet meeting, said that the US is successfully negotiating with Russia and Ukraine and according to him, a ceasefire agreement appears to be close.

"We're going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop the killing of people," Trump said.

But when it comes to security guarantees, Trump did not express himself at all willing.

"I'm not going to make any more security guarantees than necessary... We're going to make Europe do this, because Europe is a neighboring country," Trump said.

The US president emphasized that the US will partner with Ukraine only for the rare earth minerals deal and that for the latter it is an excellent deal since Americans will be working there.

President Trump made the comments during his first meeting with members of his cabinet, in response to a question from reporters about whether the agreement between Washington and Kiev on minerals would contain security guarantees for Ukraine.

On Tuesday, officials from the two countries announced that they had agreed on a draft agreement that would give Washington access to rare minerals in Ukraine.

Ukraine said today it had approved the framework agreement, but added that its success would depend on talks with President Donald Trump.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that security guarantees that Kiev considers vital still remain to be determined.

He said that during his visit to Washington on Friday he will have a broad and substantive conversation with President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, President Trump confirmed that Zelensky would come to Washington on Friday, but said the United States would not offer broad security guarantees.

A copy of the draft minerals agreement, seen by Reuters on February 25, said that "the United States government supports Ukraine's efforts to obtain the security guarantees necessary to establish a lasting peace."

The minerals agreement is part of US President Trump's efforts to bring the war between Ukraine and Russia to an end as quickly as possible.

The US president also proposed the deal as a way for Kiev to repay billions of dollars in military aid it has received from Washington since the start of the war.

Trump has also said that if a deal is reached to end the conflict, a peacekeeping presence would be needed in Ukraine. But Moscow said on Tuesday it was against deploying a NATO force there.
