Trump signs executive order on artificial intelligence, what does the US aim

In a move of great historical symbolism and strategic weight, US President Donald Trump today signed an Executive Order to launch "Mission Genesis", an ambitious national initiative led by the Department of Energy (DOE).

The mission aims to harness the revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced computing systems, fundamentally transforming the way the US produces scientific knowledge and innovation.

The initiative aims to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within a decade, a development that promises major advances in the fields of energy, national security, and basic research.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright compared the Genesis Mission to milestones like the Manhattan Project and the Apollo space program.

"Throughout our history, our greatest scientific successes have been born when our nation's brightest minds have been called to serve our nation. Today, under President Trump's leadership, the Genesis Mission unleashes the power of our National Laboratories, our supercomputers, and our data to ensure America's global leadership in artificial intelligence," he said.

The initiative follows previous moves by the Trump administration to strengthen American leadership in AI, including the Executive Order “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence” and the “America’s AI Action Plan.”

The mission is led by the Undersecretary for Science and a key figure in the global research community, Darío Gil.

Under his leadership, the Genesis Mission will mobilize: 17 DOE National Laboratories, the private sector, and academic research centers.

The goal is to create a single research and discovery platform that will interconnect: The world's most powerful supercomputers, advanced artificial intelligence systems, quantum computing technologies, and the most advanced scientific instruments in the United States.

The integrated platform, the most complex scientific infrastructure ever created, will be supported by approximately 40,000 DOE scientists, engineers, and technicians, in collaboration with leading private technology companies.

The Genesis mission focuses on three strategic axes:

1) US Energy Dominance by leveraging advanced AI tools, the mission aims to accelerate: Next-generation nuclear power technologies, fusion research, and electrical grid modernization.

2) Strengthening basic scientific research by investing in quantum technology and AI, DOE aspires to lay the foundation for the infrastructure that will give birth to the industries of the future.

3) National Security, the mission will support: the development of advanced AI systems for defense applications, strengthening the reliability of the US nuclear arsenal, faster production of new defense materials.

A defining moment for the next era of American science

"The Genesis mission is a defining moment for the next era of American science. We are connecting the nation's most advanced scientific computing infrastructure, data, and instruments into a single system that will double research productivity and solve problems once thought impossible," said Dario Gil, Director of the Genesis Mission.

For his part, Brandon Williams, Administrator of NNSA, emphasized that the mission opens the next major chapter in American scientific and defense technological superiority. With artificial intelligence tools, quantum computers, and advanced analytical systems, we will strengthen our defenses and maintain our strategic advantage.”

Recently, John Wagner, Chairman of the National Laboratory Board of Directors, stated that “National Laboratories are the driving force of American innovation. The Genesis mission fully utilizes their capabilities, allowing our scientists to work at a speed comparable to innovation itself.”

The “Genesis Mission” raises expectations for a new golden age of American scientific leadership, an era where artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and computing power combine to redefine the global technological balance.
