The Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger.

The award was given "for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science".

This was the second of the Nobel Prizes that have been awarded so far, recognizing contributions in various fields.

Eva Olsson, a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics, said the award honors the "groundbreaking work" of the team of three scientists. She noted that quantum information science has far-reaching implications in areas such as secure information transfer and quantum computing.

"Quantum information science is a vibrant and rapidly evolving endeavor," she said. "Her predictions have opened the doors to another world and also shaken the foundations of how we interpret measurements."
