Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to hold urgent ceasefire talks, after several days of fierce cross-border clashes that have caused casualties and mass evacuations, US President Donald Trump announced.

In a post on social networks, Trump said he had communicated with the leaders of both countries, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Phumtham Wechayachai, stressing that both sides have expressed readiness to "work quickly for a ceasefire and, ultimately, for peace".

Trump added that peace efforts are tied to trade interests:

They are also seeking to return to the 'Trade Table' with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until they stop fighting."

He underlined that dialogue is necessary and that the US stands ready to help as a mediator if necessary.

Thailand's Foreign Ministry confirmed that Wechayachai has asked Trump to convey a message of peace to the Cambodian side, inviting them to bilateral talks to establish clear ceasefire measures and a peaceful solution.

On the other hand, Cambodia has not yet given an official reaction on this initiative.

The fighting, which broke out on Thursday along a disputed stretch of the border, has caused at least 12 casualties, dozens injured and the evacuation of over 150,000 civilians, according to official sources from both countries.
