The lack of snow in the ski resorts in Kosovo and North Macedonia has put local businesses out of business, due to the lack of tourists.

In the ski resort of Brezovica, Kosovo, there are few people and businesses are almost empty.

"I don't remember any year like this in the last 30 years. Maybe even before. We have not had snow, it happened several times that we had the first snow maybe in the first ten days of January, but high temperatures like these, this is the first time in my life that I have seen plus 5 or 10 degrees Celsius in January. The first time in my life for the last 30 years", says Igor Nikolcevic, owner of a restaurant.

Some tourists from Albania had gone to Brezovica, but with no snow to ski they had no choice but to walk around and look at the view.

January's warm weather across Europe is due to human-caused climate change, experts say.

Meteorologist Besim Aliu says he expects temperatures to drop and fresh snow to fall at the end of the month.

In Mavrovo, North Macedonia, some businesses are offering other activities, such as mountain biking.

"I can say that this will be a disastrous season. Mavrova is the largest ski center in North Macedonia. People come to Mavrovo to ski, not for hiking or biking," says Ognen Cigovski, Director of Bistra Ski Resort.
