Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza and the ceasefire that came into effect on October 10th rely on Hamas's trust in the US president.

Given that the group has previously called Trump a racist, a “recipe for chaos” and a man with an absurd vision for Gaza, this seemed unlikely until recently. But, according to a Reuters report, “an extraordinary phone call” last month was crucial in convincing Hamas to hand over the remaining Israeli hostages, the only leverage it had in this war, two Palestinian sources told the agency.

What happened after the attack in Qatar?

During the call, Trump put Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the line after a meeting at the White House in September. The US president persuaded Netanyahu to apologize to the Qatari prime minister for the Israeli attack on a residential compound in Doha that housed Hamas political leaders.

Trump's handling of the bombing in Qatar (which failed to kill the Hamas officials he targeted, including chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya) gave Hamas more confidence that it could stand up to Netanyahu and that it was serious about ending the war in Gaza.

Dangerous gamble with pawns

After signing the US-brokered peace plan this week, Hamas has placed further faith in the word of Trump, who only this year had proposed expelling Palestinians from Gaza and rebuilding it as a tourist resort under US control.

Hamas agreed to hand over the hostages without a deal for a full Israeli withdrawal, under the terms of the deal. Two other Palestinian Hamas officials acknowledged to Reuters that this was a risky gamble, relying on Trump's personal commitment not to let the deal fall apart.

Hamas leaders are aware that this gamble could turn into a "boomerang," a Hamas official told the agency.

Many Hamas members still fear that, once the hostages are released, Israel could resume the military campaign, as it did after the January ceasefire, in which the Trump team was also involved.

However, during indirect talks with Israel at a conference center in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Hamas was sufficiently reassured by the presence of close Trump allies and regional powers to sign the ceasefire, even though many of the group's key demands remain unresolved, including steps toward a Palestinian state.

A Hamas official told Reuters that Trump's enthusiasm was "strongly felt" at the conference center.

He personally called three times during the marathon session, a senior US official added, as his son-in-law Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff moved between Israeli and Qatari negotiators to convey his messages.
