The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the arrival of a new legislative proposal for repatriations.

Through a letter sent to the leaders of the bloc before the meeting of the European Council on October 17 and 18, Von der Leyen returned to the file of immigrants, underlining the need for the creation of centers similar to those of the Italian-Albanian agreement, as she emphasizes.

" We must continue to explore the possible ways to follow in relation to the idea of developing repatriation centers outside the EU, especially in view of a new legislative proposal on repatriations. With the launch of the operations foreseen by the Italy-Albania protocol, we will also be able to learn practical lessons ", she wrote.

" We have already committed to review the concept of designated safe third countries by next year. UNHCR and IOM are ready to work with the EU on an approach that includes the whole journey, helping those seeking asylum without having to undertake dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean" , von der Leyen emphasizes, thus referring to the centers outside EU and Italy, according to Albania's model.

" Improving cooperation on the issue of repatriation is an interest of the EU that should be well reflected in our relations with partner countries. By working together and using the opportunities offered by the Visa Code, we have shown that the EU can encourage partners to work more easily with us on repatriation and make cooperation with member states more coherent,"  said Von der Leyen . .

Von der Leyen adds that immigration will continue to be a fundamental common challenge, which, he says, will require a combination of internal and external actions, more effective protection of the EU's external borders - and a determined fight against migrant smuggling, increasing deportations and developing mutually beneficial global partnerships, while underlining that increasing opportunities for legal immigration would help the fight against clandestine and contribute to "meeting the needs of the market of the work of the block".
