Taiwan unveils new submarine to defend against China

Taiwan has unveiled its first home-made submarine as it tries to bolster its defenses against a possible Chinese attack.

President Tsai Ing-wen presided over the launch ceremony in the port city of Kaohsiung on Thursday.

US officials have warned that China may be militarily capable of mounting an invasion within the next few years.

Taiwan is a self-governing island that China considers a province of its own and has vowed to reclaim one day.

Most observers believe China will not attack the island immediately, and Beijing has said it wants peaceful "reunification" with Taiwan.

But at the same time Beijing has put increasing pressure on the island with its military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, including several this month.

"History will forever remember this day," Tsai said as she stood in front of the towering submarine draped in Taiwan's flag emblem.

She added that the idea of a domestically produced submarine had previously been considered "an impossible task, but we did it".

According to military officials, the $1.54 billion diesel-powered submarine will undergo several tests and be handed over to the Navy by the end of 2024.
