Sweden has given a 37-year-old man permission to burn the Koran outside a Stockholm mosque, and this happened on the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. The police permission came two weeks after the Swedish Court of Appeal gave the green light for burning the holy book.

Soon after, the protests started and a man was arrested as he was about to throw stones. About 200 people were present at the protest, who protested against the burning of the Koran with the cry "The Koran is not in your hands, it is in our hearts and we know it by heart."

The ruling came two weeks after Sweden's Court of Appeal ruled it had overturned a ban on Koran burning imposed by police after a copy of the holy book was set on fire earlier this year, sparking weeks of protests.

The decision to allow today's protest could have serious consequences for Sweden's chances of joining NATO, due to objections from Turkey, which may confirm its opposition.

Ankara has reacted by condemning the act and stressed that insulting the Koran in Sweden is unacceptable.

"I condemn the despicable act committed in Sweden against the Koran, our holy book, on the first day of Eid al-Fitr," the festival of sacrifice celebrated by Muslims around the world," Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Twitter.

"It is unacceptable to allow these actions under the pretext of freedom of expression, to tolerate such a cruel act is to be complicit in it," added Fidan.
