The Israeli operation “Rising Lion”, in addition to aiming to strike at Iran’s nuclear program, is reminiscent of the “decapitation” strategy. The same strategy was implemented by Israel against its closest enemies, the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas, but at an even higher level because it involved key figures in the Iranian nomenclature.
The operation was quite secret and went much deeper.
"Mossad"
Some targets were hit by suicide drones that took off from “bases” set up by Mossad inside Iran. The small planes were smuggled into the country, while agents on the ground studied the “terrain” and even conducted tests. According to rumors, the drones were also “piloted” towards Esfayabad, near the capital Tehran. This modus operandi is reminiscent of the recent Ukrainian attack on Russian bomber bases.
In the past there have been attacks with these means (such as the one in Isfahan in 2023), small interventions that in addition to maintaining pressure on the Ayatollahs have served as tests in order to carry out a larger and coordinated attack. A detail revealed by the media confirms the long-term planning, the ability to move in a “hostile zone”, possible internal collaborations and the use of flexible technology. This was made possible by the existence of a vast and consolidated network, capable of getting very close to the targets thanks to a “fifth column” – also made up of locals created over time.
officer
The death toll is still being counted, but the names of the killed officers have already been released and are around 20. The commander of the “Pasdaran”, Hossein Salami (left in the main photo), Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri (right in the photo), Deputy Chief of Staff Gholamali Rashid. Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Ayatollah Khamenei and a man with many files in his hands, was seriously injured.
The IDF, in a statement, also added to the list the name of Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the space division, considered the brains of the arsenal, one of the most "valuable" officials, awarded a medal by the Supreme Leader himself after the revenge against the Jewish state.
According to one source, he was in an underground “war room” with several associates (Taher Foor, head of the drone “section,” and Davoud Shaykhiyan, air defense coordinator, both killed). According to the New York Times, the “strike” took down Esmael Qaani, who coordinates Shiite militias in the Middle East and clandestine cells in the West. His predecessor, Qasem Soleimani, was killed in Baghdad by a US drone in January 2020 on Trump’s orders.
It is surprising that the Iranian high command did not take security measures when the attack seemed a matter of days, if not hours. The scenario that saw the Hezbollah leadership in Beirut being annihilated, hunted down and tracked down in bunkers, was repeated. A version published by Fox TV from Israeli sources claims that the officers were “lured” into some kind of trap meeting and forced to stay together for a long time. This allowed the IDF to strike surgically.
Eliminating key figures contains three points:
1) Enemy intelligence knew where to find them despite the clear alarm.
2) It cannot be ruled out that Tel Aviv intends to cause a chain reaction within the country, with wider political consequences and a psychological impact on public opinion.
3) The high-value targets that have been shot down are just the latest in a long list, confirming the chronic weakness of the security apparatus. This was demonstrated by the end of the Palestinian representative Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, blown to pieces in his room inside a building “managed” by the Pasdaran in July 2024.
Scientists
The second level of beheading concerned the world of science connected to the strategic program. At least 7 scientists were killed. Among them Fereydon Abbasi-Davari, Mohammad Tehranchi, Abdulhamid Minouchehr and Ahmadreza Zolfaghari. The first had held key positions in the national atomic agency and survived an attack in 2010. His wife and children lost their lives. The second, participated in studies on nuclear warheads, but kept a low profile.
The others were university professors, part of a group of specialists who allowed the Islamic Republic to continue on an ambitious path. All had been targeted for years since Israel began its campaign in 2001 when it killed a missile expert, an action followed by missions entrusted to hired killers using weapons and magnetic devices.
Mohsen Fakrizadeh, the real father of the nuclear plan who fell in November 2020 in an ambush carried out with a remote-controlled machine gun, was also eliminated. Another proof of infiltration. A loophole that Tehran, despite its gigantic surveillance system, has never managed to plug. /Corriere della Sera
