A child abuse scandal has rocked France, with authorities investigating dozens of public kindergartens and primary schools for cases of violence, sexual assault and rape of minors.

According to the Paris prosecutor's office, investigations are underway at 84 kindergartens, about 20 primary schools and several daycare centers, following more than 100 complaints filed by parents. The cases involve children aged three and four.

At the center of the investigations are so-called "school supervisors," employees who look after children during lunch, recess, or after-school activities.

In France, these employees are not employed by the schools themselves, but by municipalities and local authorities, often without pedagogical training or specific education for working with children.

Parents and lawyers claim that they have been trying to denounce the situations for years, but have not been taken seriously.

The allegations include verbal and physical abuse, with children allegedly being shouted at, pushed or punished, as well as very serious cases of sexual abuse.

According to lawyers, these are cases of rape of three and four-year-old children, describing the situation as a "major scandal" and a serious failure of the control and recruitment system.

They warn that many of the children involved are showing severe psychological trauma and fear of the school environment.

"This is a huge scandal," said lawyer Florian Lastelle, who represents three families from Paris who have filed a police report for alleged abuse of their children.

"The public education system is a source of pride for France, but unfortunately today it cannot be said to guarantee the safety of children," he added.

Meanwhile, lawyer Louis Cailliez, who represents two Parisian families, said in February he had filed reports of the alleged rape of two children attending a nursery school in 2025.

In one case, a three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an assistant at a school in western Paris. In another case, a three-year-old boy was allegedly abused by the same person, who was then transferred to another school, despite previous allegations of child abuse.

"One morning, the boy refused to enter school and burst into tears in front of the entrance. His mother was crying, while the principal was forced to take him by force to bring him inside. At that moment, no one knew the real reason for his reaction," the lawyer said.

According to him, the psychological and physical consequences on children are severe and still ongoing.

"For the parents it is a daily torture. They want the investigations to continue and the full extent of these crimes to be revealed," he said.

Meanwhile, the trial of a school principal accused of sexually abusing five children aged three to five is expected to begin in Paris in the coming days. A verdict is also expected next month in another case, where a 47-year-old principal is accused of sexually abusing nine 10-year-old girls in Paris.
