The US Army's 101st Division is deployed to Europe for the first time since World War II. There are more than 4,700 elite soldiers of this air assault division who are already in Romania, practically a few kilometers from the Ukrainian battlefield.
"We are ready to defend every centimeter of NATO territory, we have an almost unique capacity, we are a light but highly mobile infantry division, with air attack capacity", declared the commander of the division, General John Lubas.
These are the closest American troops to the conflict that since February has seen Ukraine occupied in its southeastern part by forces sent by the Kremlin. "We are closely monitoring the Russian forces", admitted the American commanders.
Also known as the "Screaming Eagle", the division is noted for its air attacks, in particular the paratroopers who distinguished themselves in the most famous and bloody battles of the Second World War, such as in Normandy, but also in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Virtually everywhere the United States has gone to war.
