Rare US-Russia contact: Defense ministers discuss war in Ukraine
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu

The defense secretaries of the US and Russia held a telephone conversation, in a rare moment of high-level contact between the two countries since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Both the US and Russia confirmed that US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu discussed the situation in Ukraine.

After Friday's call, the Pentagon said Austin had "stressed the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid the ongoing war against Ukraine."

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that "current international security issues were discussed, including the situation in Ukraine."

After their previous conversation in May, Austin asked his counterpart to call for an immediate ceasefire - a request that was not mentioned this time.

The conversation between the two officials came after hints by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he may be willing to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and warnings from US President Joe Biden if that were to happen.

Already frosty relations between the US and Russia have further deteriorated since the invasion of Ukraine.

The leaders of the two countries had a meeting in mid-2021, which was seen as a positive step towards a better relationship. But that progress stalled as tensions escalated over Ukraine.

Putin and Biden held several phone calls in the months before the war, in which the US president warned his Russian counterpart to back off from invasion plans. Since February, when Russia's military aggression began, there have been no talks between the leaders of the two countries.

Russia has publicly condemned the US and the West for trying to influence the war by supplying Ukraine with weapons and other aid.
