The US Senate approves the same-sex marriage protection bill

The US Senate has approved a bill to protect same-sex marriage, a move that responds to concerns that the Supreme Court could overturn a 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

The bill, which would have enshrined same-sex marriage in federal law, passed Tuesday with 61 votes, one more than the 60 votes needed to pass.

36 senators were opposed and 12 Republicans joined 49 Democrats in passing the bill, AP reported.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the bill was "expected" and was part of "America's difficult but relentless march toward greater equality."

It is now up to the House of Representatives to approve the Senate proposal before it is sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

Biden praised the bipartisan vote and said he would sign the bill "quickly and proudly" if it passes the House.
