US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke about the war in Ukraine in an interview with Fox News, where he gave an assessment of the current situation on the ground, as well as information on the progress of negotiations with Russia and Ukraine.
At first, he said he wanted to clarify US President Donald Trump's statements that this is "the easiest war to resolve."
"I think what he's really trying to say is that this is the most illogical war. It's a war that you would logically conclude has to end, because in the traditional sense of victory, nobody is really winning. 7,000 Russian soldiers are being killed every week. So 7,000 is more than we've lost in several whole wars. They're losing 7,000 soldiers a week just on the Russian side, not to mention the devastation on the Ukrainian side," Rubio said.
He then assessed the current situation on the front and explained the American approach to negotiations.
"What is being fought for now is a space of 30 to 50 kilometers and the 20 percent of the Donetsk region that remains. And what we have tried to do, and I think we have made some progress, is to understand what the Ukrainians can agree to, in order to provide them with security guarantees for the future, that they will never be attacked again, that will enable them not only to rebuild their economy, but also to progress as a state, to be a country with a growing economy. Theoretically, if they do the right things, in 10 years Ukraine's GDP could be greater than Russia's," he said.
