A worker has been crushed to death by a robot in South Korea after failing to distinguish it from the boxes of food he was handling.

The incident occurred when the employee of a robotics company that had created the robot in question was inspecting the robot for the work it was supposed to do as usual.

The robotic arm, mistaking the man for a box of vegetables, grabbed him and pushed his body into the conveyor belt, crushing his face and chest, South Korean news agency Yonhap said.

The 40-year-old employee was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

According to Yonhap media, the robot was responsible for picking up boxes of peppers and transferring them to pallets.

The worker had checked the robot's sensor operation ahead of its test at the pepper sorting plant in South Gyeongsang province, scheduled for Nov. 8, the agency added, citing police.

In a statement after the incident, an official from the Donggoseong Export Agricultural Complex, which owns the factory, called for an "accurate and safe" system to be put in place.
