Electricity restored in some parts of Spain, Sánchez: Causes still
Chaos in Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said electricity had been restored to some areas in the north and south of Spain "thanks to help from France and Morocco."

Earlier, the Spanish grid operator said electricity was being restored "in some areas of the north, south and west of the Iberian peninsula."

"We urge you to turn to official channels for information," Sánchez continues - appealing to citizens in Spain to avoid " disinformation ."

He says the cause of the power outage is still unknown, and asked not to speculate.

"No cause can be ruled out at this point," Sánchez added.

French network operator RTE is already helping to supply Spain's electricity grid.

RTE says it has already resupplied 700 MW of Spanish consumption and will increase the assistance once the Iberian network can take it.

Spain and Portugal were hit by a widespread power outage on Monday that paralyzed public transport, caused major traffic jams and flight delays.

Utility operators sought to restore the network, but Red Eléctrica initially clarified that the outage, the cause of which was not immediately known, could last between six and 10 hours.

The outage caused chaos in parts of Portugal and Spain, as traffic lights stopped working, causing traffic jams.

Transport networks were halted, hospitals were left without power and people were left stranded on the subway and in elevators.

In Madrid, hundreds of people stood in the streets outside office buildings and there was a heavy police presence around several important buildings, with officers directing traffic.

The Spanish and Portuguese governments met to discuss the outage, which also briefly affected parts of France, and a crisis committee was set up in Spain, the BBC reports.
