Former Mossad agent's revolt: Funds from Qatar and cryptocurrency accounts,
Netanyahu

On September 9, Israel carried out an airstrike on Qatari territory, an unprecedented event as no targets in the Gulf Emirates had ever been hit before. The target was a group of Hamas leaders in Doha, where Qatar has provided official asylum for decades.

Although the results of the attack were initially unclear (and later turned out to be largely unsuccessful), Netanyahu immediately took responsibility, saying: It was an independent Israeli operation. Israel initiated it, carried it out, and takes full responsibility.

Why Israel officially acknowledges the attack

This is unusual. Israel rarely publicly claims responsibility for operations in third countries, even when the evidence is clear. So far, it has admitted to strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, but not for the assassinations of Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon or Hamas supreme leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The diplomatic route

Usually, this ambiguity serves to facilitate diplomatic channels and avoid retaliation from the countries affected. But in the case of Qatar, Netanyahu wanted to send a clear signal: he is free to act there, despite the fact that it hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East.

Relations between Netanyahu and Qatar are currently in the spotlight in Israel, while the war in Gaza continues without real negotiations for the release of hostages and without a clear political strategy for peace or a ceasefire.

Distrust of the Shin Bet director

Netanyahu has fired the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, after he launched an investigation into the ties of two of Netanyahu's close aides to Qatar: Eli Feldstein and Yonatan Urich (the latter under investigation for receiving funds). This raises suspicions of political interference in sensitive investigations.

Qatar's key role in strengthening Hamas

Without Qatar's involvement, the growth of Hamas's political and military power in Gaza, nor the events of October 7, 2023, would be incomprehensible.

Qatar, a US ally in the Persian Gulf, possesses the world's third-largest natural gas reserves, a sovereign wealth fund of $557 billion, and only 400,000 citizens, alongside 2.7 million migrants, many of them in conditions of modern slavery.

For decades, Qatar has funded Hamas, positioning itself as a mediator, but at the same time fueling radicalism in Gaza.

Mossad's special financial intelligence unit

Nuk mund ta them sot. A ka ndonjë investim?

Levi concludes: This system is destroying the state of Israel. The agents can no longer keep it to themselves. They must speak out. Then we will learn: did we betray the prime minister or did he betray us?

The current situation and the politics of war

Netanyahu has replaced Ronen Bar with a loyalist, David Zini, at the head of the Shabak, a figure who will not be bothered by investigations.

The Prime Minister continues to categorically deny receiving any funds from Qatar or other secret donors. Meanwhile, ongoing legal proceedings against him relate to much smaller amounts, such as $192,000 from two Israeli businessmen, which are still unproven.

While Israel is at war, every investigation, every critical voice like that of Udi Levi, remains drowned out by the noise of the guns. The price? An unbreakable alliance with the messianic and racist far right, which demands the violent depopulation of Gaza and the West Bank./ Corriere della Sera
