The United Kingdom made the historic decision to recognize the Palestinian state, joining its allies.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, from New York, where the UN General Assembly is taking place, said that this step aims to keep hope alive for a resolution to the conflict between the two countries.

She urged Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank in retaliation.

"This is a historic step that we are taking together with our allies to recognize the State of Palestine, to keep alive the hope of a two-state solution, which is the only path to peace and security in the region," said British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

The British Secretary stressed that Hamas remains a terrorist organization and can have no role in the future of Palestine.

"Hamas is a barbaric terrorist organization that commits atrocities and must immediately release the hostages. This decision is in favor of the two-state solution and against what Hamas is demanding."

In addition to Britain, Palestine was also recognized by Canada, Australia and Portugal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the decision.
