Saudi Arabia's horrific record: 340 executions in one year

Saudi Arabia has set another black record for the number of executions carried out in a single year, foreign media reports. The kingdom has executed 340 people so far this year, after authorities announced that three people were sentenced to death and executed on Monday.

This balance sheet marks the second consecutive year that Saudi Arabia has broken its record for executions, since human rights organizations began documenting these figures in the 1990s. In 2024, the country had executed 338 people.

A statement from the Interior Ministry, carried by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), said three people were executed in Mecca after being convicted of murder. Since the beginning of 2025, Saudi Arabia has executed 232 people for drug-related offenses.

Analysts attribute the significant increase in executions mainly to the "war on drugs" launched in 2023. Many of those arrested in the early stages of this campaign are only being executed now, after the completion of legal procedures and the issuance of final decisions.

Saudi Arabia resumed executions for drug-related offenses in late 2022, after suspending the death penalty for these cases for about 3 years.

Observers say foreigners are bearing the brunt of this campaign. Saudi Arabia has relied on millions of foreign workers for decades to build major infrastructure projects as well as the hospitality and service sectors.

As the world's largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia has faced constant criticism over the death penalty, which human rights organizations describe as excessive and in sharp contrast to the kingdom's efforts to present a modern image on the international stage.

Amnesty International has been documenting executions in Saudi Arabia since 1990, while data for the period before this year remains largely unclear.
