Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a limited ceasefire over attacks on ports and energy facilities in the Ukraine-Russia war, during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a summit in Turkmenistan.
Erdogan told Putin that efforts to end the war were worthwhile and that implementing a limited ceasefire in this regard would bring benefits to each side.
The Turkish president's statements come amid increased attacks on Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea by Kiev drones. The incidents have prompted sharp criticism in Ankara, which has summoned Russian and Ukrainian envoys, warning that the attacks constituted a dangerous escalation.
Speaking to reporters in Kiev on Thursday, President Zelensky confirmed that Turkey was working on plans for a ceasefire related specifically to energy infrastructure and shipping.
Zelensky said he supported Erdogan's proposal, but that, according to him, the Russians had told him that they would not accept any ceasefire unless an agreement was signed.
