Prosecutor Jack Smith

The independent special investigator who also dealt with war crimes in Kosovo, Jack Smith, will investigate the allegations against former president Donald Trump. He was appointed Friday by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Former US Attorney Jack Smith will lead investigations into two cases: the secret documents seized at Donald Trump's private Mar-a-Lago home and the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in Washington.

The nomination came just three days after Trump announced his intention to run again as the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election.

Garland said that "in light of recent developments, including the previous President's announcement that he is a presidential candidate in the upcoming election, and the current President's (Joe Biden) intention to also be a candidate, I have come to the conclusion that there is a public interest in appointing a special investigator".

Trump is accused of theft and illegal possession of secret documents, illegal concealment of government documents and obstruction of justice. The US judiciary is also conducting massive investigations into the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters in January 2021.

Attorney Smith worked from 2008 to 2010 at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he oversaw war crimes investigations. After 2010, he led a team of prosecutors at the US Department of Justice that handled cases of public corruption and election abuse. Most recently, Smith served as a prosecutor at the special court in The Hague charged with the investigation and trial of war crimes in Kosovo. In a first statement, Smith stated that he would conduct the investigation quickly, independently and thoroughly.

Smith is the second special counsel against Trump

Smith is the second special investigator to deal with the former US president. During the Republican's tenure in the White House in 2017, former FBI chief Robert Mueller was charged with Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

In his nearly two-year investigation, Mueller failed to find enough evidence of illegal collusion between Trump's campaign team and Russia. However, he did not exonerate the former President from suspicion of criminal obstruction of justice.

Trump has criticized the investigations against him as politically motivated and has long said they are just an effort by his opponents to prevent him from returning to the White House. He called the appointment of a new special investigator "unfair." He told Fox News that the appointment was "unacceptable" and warned that he would not cooperate with the investigator./DW
