El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced the decision to launch a corruption investigation against every member of his government, including himself.
The head of state called officials from the executive branch of his government to a meeting, where he voted a directive to the Attorney General for this purpose.
"God willing, our fight against corruption will be as successful as our fight against gangs. I want to ask the Attorney General to publicly investigate the activities of all those sitting here," he said at the meeting.
Bukele, who has been in power since 2019, said he feared "leaving a bad legacy". He expressed concern about the officials' possible ties to corruption, citing the experience of past presidents.
"You are under investigation, I cannot surround myself with criminals," he told officials.
Bukele is known for the successful war he declared against gangs and drug cartels, restoring El Salvador's lack of peace for years.
