After 20 days in hospital, Pope Francis: Death is a reality we must face

"No new crises have occurred, high-flow oxygen continues during the day and mechanical ventilation at night."

This is what the Vatican Press Office reports in its new evening update on the health of Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome for twenty days with bilateral pneumonia.

The Pope "has resumed some work activities, spent the day in a chair. He has increased respiratory physiotherapy and active motor therapy."

This morning Pope Francis had already resumed "high oxygen ventilation", according to Vatican sources.

In his homily for today, Ash Wednesday, the Holy Father recalled that death is "a reality that we must face, a sign of the uncertainty and transience of our lives." Those ashes, the Pope continued, recall "the fragility in the experience of illness, in poverty, in the suffering that sometimes falls unexpectedly on us and our families."
