US forces have shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone that “aggressively” approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, US Central Command announced on Tuesday. According to the command’s spokesman, Captain Tim Hawkins, the drone continued to approach the ship despite measures taken by US forces to de-escalate the situation.

The USS Abraham Lincoln was about 500 nautical miles (about 800 km) off the southern coast of Iran at the time of the incident. There were no casualties or material damage to the ship, according to the statement. The drone was shot down by an F-35C fighter jet stationed in Lincoln. The incident occurred just hours after Iranian forces threatened a U.S.-flagged and crewed merchant vessel, the Stena Imperative, which was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the U.S. statement, two Iranian vessels and a Mohajer drone approached the vessel rapidly and threatened to seize and seize the tanker. The USS McFaul and air support from the U.S. Air Force ensured the Stena Imperative's departure, which is now sailing safely.

The events come amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, which have escalated since large-scale protests in Iran began in late December against the economic crisis and the regime's rule. President Donald Trump had promised in January to spare Iranians from a violent crackdown on the protests, but has since transformed that approach into a pressure campaign to force Iran to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Trump stressed on Monday that he favors a deal with Iran, not ruling out military action if talks fail. “We are talking to Iran. If we can get something done, that will be good, if not, bad things will happen,” he said. The incident came just hours after the Iranian president ordered his foreign minister to “pursue fair and equal negotiations” with the United States, one of the first signals from Tehran indicating a willingness to negotiate after talks collapsed last summer.

Turkey has played a behind-the-scenes role in facilitating the talks, while US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is on a regional visit. However, a Turkish official said the location and date of the meetings remained uncertain, stressing Ankara's readiness to support the negotiation process.

Analysts warn that such clashes in international waters could heighten tensions and further complicate relations between the US and Iran, especially at a time when diplomatic pressure for a nuclear deal is growing.
