Israeli politicians: Gaza refugees to be taken by the West

Two senior Israeli politicians suggest that Western countries should accept refugees leaving Gaza.

Danny Danon and Ram Ben-Barak, in an opinion for the American newspaper "Wall Street Journal", say that the West must open its heart to accept hundreds of thousands of Palestinian immigrants who are leaving Gaza, after several weeks of merciless bombing by Israel.

They say that Europe and the US have shown earlier that they are ready to open their gates to accept millions of migrants displaced by conflicts. Their opinion also mentions the case of Albania, which sheltered hundreds of thousands of Albanian refugees during the Kosovo war.

This theory is not new, and has been circulating among Israeli circles for days, but it is now taking the form of a concrete proposal.

Who are the two authors of the article?

Danny Danon is an Israeli politician and former diplomat. A member of the Likud party, Danon served in the Knesset from 2009 to 2015 and re-entered the Knesset in 2022. From 2015 to 2020, Danon served as Israel's 17th Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Ram Ben-Barak is an Israeli politician and former member of the Israeli security forces. He served as deputy director of the Mossad and director general of the Ministry of Intelligence Services and the Ministry of Strategic Affairs. He has served as a member of the Knesset for Yesh Atid since April 2019.
