Kosovo police say they have clashed with gunfire with people in Zubin Potok who were trying to smuggle sheep from Serbia.
Police said that during the realization of the tasks and police activities, police officials from the Rapid Intervention Unit of the Border Police, at around 6:15 am today in the village of Bube in Zubin Potak, have noticed suspicious movements of several vehicles.
"In an attempt to stop and search suspected vehicles, police have encountered armed resistance from suspects. In order to protect themselves and bring the situation under control, police officers responded to the attack with weapons and managed to arrest one of the suspects: D.I., (1981, a Kosovo Serb male by Mr. Potoku). During the exchange of fire, police officers and the arrested man were not injured," the police statement said.
During the search of the truck, 40 pieces of sheep were found, without follow-up documentation and suspected to have been smuggled from Serbia to the Republic of Kosovo. There were also two abandoned vehicles, which were allegedly in the truck's tracking.
The relevant police units, including the IPK, have been released at the scene and the prosecutor has been notified about the case. The suspect was initiated in the case against two criminal offences: 'assaulting the official' and 'smuggling of goods'.
The truck with sheep was taken to the customs terminal, two vehicles found at the scene were confiscated, and on the decision by the prosecutor, the suspect is sent to custody for up to 48 hours.
